Wooden kindergartens in Slovenia
Jelka kindergarten, Ljubljana
The Jelka kindergarten is one of the first kindergartens in
Slovenia where they opted for a RIKO wooden extension, solving the shortage of
space for two forms within an exceptionally short time. The wooden extension enabled them to solve the issue of childcare for 24
children despite a limited amount of space (the original part of the
kindergarten is located between apartment blocks and does not allow much space
for construction) in a simple, healthy – and above all – very rapid
manner. According to one of the teachers at the
Jelka kindergarten, the children feel very good in this living space. “This became apparent as early as at the beginning of the school year,
when their initiation occurred quickly and without complications which
are often common in children starting kindergarten.”
Kekec kindergarten, Ljubljana
The first kindergarten steps
are definitely easier if our youngsters get the feeling of entering a fairytale
world. The innovatively colorful and
changing wooden façade is sure to give the
children the impression of a wonderland. The Kekec kindergarten stands out for its
fairytale appearance and surprising architectural solutions where multi-colored
“brise-soleil” are used as blinds, as an integral part of the
façade and as toys for the children. There is probably no need to
mention that the Kekec kindergarten fascinates both the children and
parents alike, and also the teachers.
Wooden kindergartens and schools in Italy
In Italy, municipalities and companies often choose wood as a building material
for kindergartens and schools. By
doing so, the state or company not only shows its affinity with ecology and
sustainability but the reasons for building wooden kindergartens are also
to be found in the speed of implementation and the adaptability of
architectural solutions involving wood.
Stella – Tetra Pak kindergarten
As an example proving the
stride towards sustainability, the reputable international Tetra Pak Group
has built a wooden kindergarten in Modena for their employees’ children. The project has stirred up a great deal of interest
and attention among the public and media, for the ecological construction
and innovative architecture as well as for the excellent cooperation
between the company and the local authorities providing financial support
for the construction of the wooden kindergarten. With its unusual architecture, the Stella kindergarten of Tetra Pak approaches
the imaginary world of the youngsters where they can be relaxed in a healthy
living space.
Il giardino di ciliegi (cherry garden) kindergarten in Castiglioni
The kindergarten in Castiglioni called the Cherry Garden is set in a wonderful location
close to Lake Como. It
distinguishes itself by its entirely wooden design, with wood being present in
every corner and in the interior arrangements. The warmth of the material and the child-oriented solutions have a
positive impact on the youngsters. The
ultimate solution was nominated at the Leaf Awards as the best architecture
project of the year 2007.

Il paese dei colori (world of colors) kindergarten – C.M.S.
The company C.M.S. built the colorful Il paese dei colori kindergarten in Marano sul
Panaro, Modena province, for its employees’ children. The kindergarten is a world of colors encouraging children to
creativity and originality. The
kindergarten was built extremely fast – which saved the company time and
money as their childcare problem was solved, as it were, overnight.
L. e G. Antonini school
No doubt the L. e G.
Antonini school of Morazzone, Varese, holds the construction time
record. The building started erection at the end of July, admitting the first
pupils on 1st September.
Fornacette kindergarten
Even the local authorities are
increasingly aware of the fact that wood constructions are sustainable. In a public tender conducted in Fornacette near Pisa, a wooden building by RIKO was selected to house the Calcinaia
primary school classes. Among
the competing bids, RIKO’s building best satisfied their requirements and fulfilled the high criteria set for the construction of the school in
Fornacette, Pisa.
